What is the Intramural Open?

It’s that time of the year again where we put our fitness to the test with the CrossFit Open. Like last year, we are going to have a fun twist on the Open, putting together an “Intramural” for everyone at BMCF.

We want everyone to participate, regardless of age or experience level!

For five weeks (February 22 – March 26) we will be doing each of the weekly CrossFit Open workouts together — along with the all other CrossFitters in the world! (Last year over 380,000 people took part in the Worldwide Open!) However, the “Intramural” twist is that each person who participates in our in-house Intramural will be on an inter-gym team. Each team will have a captain and there will be team and individual points awarded each week*.

*For this in-house competition, the main emphasis of points will be on participation — not performance. So if you’re worried about “not being ready” or “not being in good enough shape” – don’t be; all that’s required is that you show up, do work, and cheer on your teammates!

Our goal is to make this a fun experience for everyone and bring our community together to support one another in pursuing our health and fitness goals.

Draft Party  (Saturday, Feb 17 @ 10am)

This year we will be kicking off the Intramural Open with a Draft Party! It will be at the gym following our regular 9am WOD on the 17th. Come do the workout and stick around to find out what team you are on and meet fellow team members who you may not already know.

BMCF Intramural Open Begins  (Friday, Feb 23)

CrossFit HQ will announce the first Open workout on Thursday, February 22rd at 6pm during a live online announcement. We will be showing the announcement at the gym and watching some of CrossFit’s top athletes perform the workout live.

Participants in the Intramural will be doing the Open workouts the following day during our BMCF Intramural Open “Friday Night Lights,” beginning February 24th @ 4:30pm.

For the next five weeks, a similar format will ensue with a Thursday night live online workout announcement by HQ, and we will be programming the Open workout for our Friday WODs.

Workout Days

Friday Night Lights 4:30-7:00pm

  • Come dressed in your team colors and show your team pride (this is very important when it comes to your team score!)
  • Complete the workout to the standards set at the beginning of the night.
  • Sign your score card.
  • Can’t attend Friday Night Lights? Open Gym Saturday @ 10am-12pm to host make-ups.

Each heat will judge the heat after them. The first heat will be judged by coaches and/or other earlier arrived athletes. Our head coach will go over standards for the movements prior to starting the event.

Intramural Scoring System

1) Attendance – points are awarded for each team player who completes the workout each week:

  • 2 points for completing the workout during “Friday Night Lights”
  • 1 point for completing it during any other class or open gym

If workout is done twice, you will only receive credit for one. If you do it both Friday and Saturday, 2 points will still be awarded for the Friday attendance.

2) Spirit – 5 points Awarded to the team that has the most pride, noise, and of course, PRESENCE each week.

3) Bonus – 5 points Awarded to each athlete who officially registers for the Open on games.crossfit.com

Winning Team – Team with most points at the end of the Intramural Open receive a plaque forever commemorating their win displayed in the lobby of the gym.
